Yes, Val Thorens works well for families: it holds the Famille Plus label, has four completely free beginner lifts, ski lessons from age 2 and a nursery that takes babies from 3 months. Children under 5 ski for free, and with Family Flex the parents pay the child price for their lift pass too. This guide covers what parents need to know for the 2026/27 season, from the resort's own websites and the ski schools themselves (checked 23 October 2026).
Is Val Thorens good for families?
Val Thorens holds the Famille Plus label. According to the resort's website, the label comes with six commitments, among them a welcome for families, lift pass discounts, activities for every age, on-site medical care for minor problems, and childcare.
The layout helps too. Les 3 Vallées describes a pedestrian-friendly village you can cross on foot in about 20 minutes, with a free shuttle between the areas. Val Thorens also has après-ski and nightlife, so if quiet evenings matter to you, ask what is near the apartment before you book. Which area suits families: where to stay in Val Thorens.

The Val Thorens website lists many ski schools and says three of them have a secure ski kindergarten. These are the options by age, as the schools themselves publish them:

Nursery and babysitting: what to do with the little ones
According to ESF Val Thorens, its nursery is in the Montana building at the bottom of the resort and takes babies from 3 months: the Nurserie for 3 to 17 months and the Garderie for 18 to 36 months. You can book mornings (8:30 to 11:30), afternoons (14:00 to 17:00) or full days, for 5 or 6 days. Meals are extra, snacks are included, and there are rooms for naps. On its website, as of October 2026, a week of mornings or afternoons starts at €340 and a week of full days at €490.
What to bring, according to ESF: an up-to-date health record and proof that vaccinations are up to date, the completed health and allergy forms, a change of clothes, nappies, and a dummy or soft toy if your child has one. During the French school holidays you can visit the nursery between 17:30 and 18:30 to meet the staff.
For 3 to 5 year olds who don't ski all day, ESF runs a Kids Club without skiing, in the afternoons in high season, with limited places. Babysitters: the Val Thorens website has a list, and Les 3 Vallées advises booking in advance.
Where do beginners start? Free lifts and the beginner pass
According to SETAM, the Val Thorens lift company, four magic carpets are completely free: Campagnols, Musaraigne and the two Castor & Pollux carpets. The resort's website places them in two free learning areas: on the Voie Lactée piste next to Castor & Pollux, and another area next to Musaraigne and Campagnols.
When the children are ready to move on, there is the EasyRider pass: according to SETAM, for 4 hours or a day, at 50% of the normal price. It opens the green and blue pistes and five lifts: Cairn, 2 Lacs, Cascades, Moutière and Caron. According to the resort's website it is sold only at the lift pass sales points, and SETAM says that is also where you get a special beginners' map.
Once confidence grows, there are fun areas. According to Les 3 Vallées, the Piste de l'Espace and Expérience Spatiale, with tunnels, rollers and easy obstacles, are reached from the 2 Lacs lift, also with the EasyRider pass. There is also the VT Fun Ride, a 900 m run with tunnels, bridges and turns. The official piste map also marks an Espace débutant and an Espace junior.

- Early December: the whole 3 Vallées area opens on 5 December 2026 (Val Thorens itself on 21 November). According to ESF, Piou-Piou and Sifflote start on 6 December and children's group lessons on 7 December, so a week starting Saturday 5 December works for lessons from the Sunday or Monday.

Checklist for parents
- 1Book lessons and lift passes online in advance, above all in the French school holidays (a tip from Les 3 Vallées).

- 3Equipment: according to ESF, equipment is not included in lessons. Children come with skis and boots, a helmet (compulsory), gloves, goggles and sun cream, and poles only from the 1ère étoile level.
- 4Insurance: according to ESF, pupils are not insured by the school. You can add Carré Neige insurance to the lift pass, and travel insurance that covers skiing is worth having anyway.
- 5On the first day: note the instructor's name and the sign they stand under, so you know where to go the next morning (an ESF tip).
- 6If your child has a phone: install the Les 3 Vallées app for the whole family. According to Les 3 Vallées, that way you can see where everyone is on the slopes.
