Val Thorens, Méribel and Courchevel are the best-known resorts of Les 3 Vallées, the world's largest linked ski area: 600 km and 334 pistes. They are connected by pistes and lifts, so with a 3 Vallées pass you can ski all three in one holiday. Short answer: choose Val Thorens if snow matters most (village at 2,300 m, the longest season, 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027), Méribel for a traditional village in the middle of the area, and Courchevel for luxury. The real difference is not how much skiing you get, but where you sleep: at what altitude, in what atmosphere and for how much money.

Val Thorens: when snow matters most
Altitude is Val Thorens' big advantage. The village sits at 2,300 m and the pistes reach 3,230 m. That is why its season is the longest of the three: from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, about two weeks before Méribel and Courchevel open and about two weeks after they close. If you travel before 5 December or in the last two weeks of April, Val Thorens and Orelle are in practice the only part of Les 3 Vallées you can ski.
The atmosphere is young and lively. Val Thorens is known for its après-ski, with La Folie Douce on the slopes and Le Malaysia at night. You can find quiet if you want it, but it is not a pastoral village: the buildings are modern and most of life happens between the pistes and the bars. More in our guide to après-ski and restaurants in Val Thorens.
Méribel: the centre of Les 3 Vallées
Méribel sits in the middle valley, so it is the easiest base for reaching every direction: Courchevel on one side, Les Menuires and Val Thorens on the other. The resort was founded in the late 1930s by a Scottish officer, Peter Lindsay; the first lift was built in 1938, and building has kept to the Savoie style of wood and stone. In 2023 it co-hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships with Courchevel.
Méribel is lower than Val Thorens and its season is shorter (5 December – 18 April). At the start and end of the season, snow in the village itself is less certain than at 2,300 m.
Courchevel: luxury
Courchevel is four villages at different heights: Le Praz (1,300 m), Village (1,550 m), Moriond (1,650 m) and Courchevel 1850, the highest and most famous. It is known as a particularly upmarket ski destination, with hotels and restaurants of the highest level, and hosted events of the 1992 Olympics and the 2023 World Championships. If budget is no limit and hotel service matters to you, this is the place; for groups of friends and families counting every euro, less so.
Can beginners ski to Courchevel from Val Thorens?
Yes, once you are comfortable on blue runs. The Les 3 Vallées press kit describes a family day from Val Thorens to Courchevel on blue runs only, and another from Courchevel to Orelle. Leave early, because the way back is long, and check before you go when the lifts back to Val Thorens close, so you are not stuck in another valley at the end of the day.
What about Les Menuires?
Les Menuires is in the same valley as Val Thorens (the Belleville valley), lower down. It is open from 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, like the rest of Les 3 Vallées, and you ski down to it from Val Thorens with a 3 Vallées pass.
So which should you choose?
- Snow comes first, or you travel early or late in the season: Val Thorens.
- A family who wants a village feel and a central base: Méribel.
- A luxury holiday: Courchevel.
- You want all three: stay in Val Thorens, buy a 3 Vallées pass and spend a day in Méribel and a day in Courchevel. For six days the 3 Vallées pass costs €53.50 more per adult than the Val Thorens-Orelle pass (€421 against €367.50 from 19 December 2026). Details in our guide to Val Thorens ski pass prices.
Why we are in Val Thorens
SkiShare is an Israeli company that rents apartments only in Val Thorens: our own, by the night, and weekly apartments from Saturday to Saturday. That choice is deliberate. Most guests come for one week, not always the week they would pick, and Val Thorens' altitude gives the best chance of good snow that week. From there, all of Les 3 Vallées is open to you. Enter your dates on our apartments page to see which are free and the price of your stay.
